Oil Spots on Jackson Dollars

I’m quoted in Collectors' Clearinghouse in the October 20 CoinWorld. The article is about oil spots on the Jackson presidential dollars (that’s Andrew, not Daniel).

I had just received several spotted coins, which I sent back to the mint. But before I sent them back I scanned them and sent the images to CoinWorld. This seems to be a fairly common issue. Though the US Mint won’t fess up, CoinWorld examined similar spots under magnification and discovered a rainbow effect that may have resulted from oil contamination at the Mint. Here’s what I wrote:

Every year I order at least two each of the US Mint Set, Proof Set and Silver Proof Set. I just received this year's order, and I'm glad that the US Mint has a 30-day return policy because half the coins are going back.

The Jackson dollar in the Philadelphia mint set is covered with stains. There is a large gash through the top of the Jackson dollar in the second mint set, but I'm keeping that in case it's a die error. The nickel and Kennedy half in both proof sets are covered with black spots in exactly the same locations, and the ear lobe on one of the Kennedy halves is scuffed. Finally, there is a very visible spot by the nose of the Kennedy half in the silver proof set. Throughout, there is a considerable amount of dust inside the sealed cases.

Such widespread problems seem to point to a growing lack of quality control at the US Mint.
